Alkoxylation
During the production of ethoxylated surfactants or propoxylated polyether
polyols, the catalyst (normally KOH) must be neutralized. When PURAC lactic acid
is used, no filtration of precipitated salts is necessary, which results in
ease of operation and lower overall costs. In addition, the end product has a
better odor, which is a particular advantage if the surfactants will be used in
cosmetic products.
Polyurethane formulations
PURAC L(+)-lactic acid is used in polyurethane formulations, e.g. for foams. In
this application, its main functions include:
- Improved stability of the catalyst
- Improved processing
- Enhanced isocyanate conversion
- Action as a blowing agent (lower amounts of water
needed) resulting in better curing and adhesion of the foam
- Lactic acid in combination with alkylamino
oxamide functions as a good catalyst, resulting in urethane foams with
good physical properties
