Being a natural constituent of the human skin, L(+)-lactic acid and lactates are well known for their positive effects on the skin. It is widely used in cosmetic products for its excellent moisturizing properties in both leave-on as well as rinse-off products. Detergent products like manual dishwashing, liquid soap and hand laundry washing can cause irritation and dryness of the skin due to frequent contact. Therefore, these are key features to prevent. Incorporation of lactates offers formulators the opportunity to formulate with effective, less expensive but often "harsher" surfactants, whilst still obtaining mild yet cost-effective formulations.
