The bioplastic heat challenge
Most bioplastics of the past have had the major drawback that
they could not withstand high temperatures. However, Purac
has developed a solution with PLA-based bioplastics.
PLA is an acronym that describes not just one product, but actually
a range of different polymers. By combining D and L Lactides in
different ways, stereo-complex polymers with a wide range of
properties such as increased heat stability can be produced.
Groundbreaking high heat technology from
Purac
Using D Lactide, stereo-complex technology can
be used to develop a range of new heat-resistant PLA applications.
Purac has demonstrated that this is not just a theory by developing
a range of technologies in cooperation with Universities,
Institutes, compounders and brand owners.
Purac has developed a high heat PLA variety that can withstand
temperatures up to 180°C / 356°F. This heat resistant
bioplastic is ideal for biobased beverage cups for hot drinks
such as coffee, soup, hot chocolate, tea, etc.
