CSM's subsidiary Purac and Indorama Ventures PLC (IVL) are in discussions to set up a Polylactic acid (PLA) manufacturing facility in Thailand, with an initial capacity of 10,000 tons per annum being raised to 100,000 tons per annum after developing application specific grades. This product would be based on high purity (GMO free) Lactides produced by Purac. The Lactide monomers for the production of PLA will be sourced from Purac's Lactides production plant in Rayong, Thailand as well as from other Purac sites.
The recent update of Directive 95/2/EC approves the use of sodium and potassium salts of both lactate and acetate in pre-packed preparations of fresh minced meat on the European market. Both ingredients are effective to extend shelf life and to prevent color changes in minced meat.
Purac has developed a PLA compound with heat stability and impact strength comparable to ABS. This material utilizes stereo-complex technology which is based on Purac's unique L-Lactide and D-Lactide monomers for the second generation PLA. The new PLA compound performs at a comparable level to ABS in injection moulding applications.
Purac announces the investment in a new manufacturing facility for its biomedical polymers. The plant is meant to support the growing resorbable polymers business of Purac Biomaterials. Purac currently operates a plant for biomedical polymers in The Netherlands. This second facility will be built in the USA. The investment for this new plant will be EUR 15 million. The construction of the facility will start in 2011 and is expected to be completed before the end of the year.
Purac and Arkema announce their collaboration in functional Lactide-based block copolymers. These innovative block copolymers will enhance the thermo-mechanical and physical properties of many biobased polymers like Poly Lactic Acid (PLA), resulting in a wider range of applications opportunities. These copolymers are produced by combining Arkema's organic catalysis ring-opening polymerisation technology with Purac's L- and D-Lactide monomers.
CSM has acquired the remaining 50% of the shares of the lactic acid production facility in Blair, Nebraska (US) from its joint venture partner Cargill. This production facility has been a joint venture between CSM's subsidiary Purac and Cargill since 1997.
